Range Rover PPF: A UK Owner's Guide to Paint Protection Film

Paint protection film makes more sense on a Range Rover than on almost any other car sold in the UK. The bonnet and front bumper are huge, motorway gravel exposure is constant, and a single bonnet respray on an Autobiography at a JLR-approved body shop is £1,800-£2,500. This guide covers what to budget across L460, Sport, Velar, Evoque and Defender, which film to spec, and what a competent installer should and shouldn't do on aluminium-bodied JLR cars.

01

Why Range Rovers are a strong case for PPF

Factory paint on a current Range Rover sits in the 130-150 micron range — decent by industry standards, but the variable that matters is surface area, not thickness. The frontal area of an L460 is roughly twice that of a typical hatchback, which means twice the exposure to motorway chipping, twice the bumper to refinish, and twice the cost when a stone catches the bonnet at 70mph. Add in the higher-than-average key-scratch and trolley-strike risk that comes with parking a premium SUV in supermarket car parks, plus theft attempts that often leave door handle damage, and the maths for at least a front-end PPF kit makes sense on most specs. For a wider primer on what the film actually is and how it works, see what is PPF.

02

L460, Sport, Velar, Evoque, Defender — what is different

Coverage and cost scale with the car, but each model has quirks worth knowing before you book. The current L460 (2022+) is aluminium-intensive. PPF behaves identically on aluminium and steel for protection purposes — adhesion, longevity, self-healing performance are all the same — but installers need to understand panel-flex tolerances on the very large bonnet and tailgate. Any reputable premium installer in the UK will be familiar with this; it is only an issue with general-purpose detailers branching into PPF. The Range Rover Sport sits between the L460 and the Velar on cost — the bonnet is shorter than the full-size car, but the sculpted bumper and wider wings mean kit prices are closer to L460 than to Velar. Velar and Evoque have smaller panels across the board and typically come in about 20 percent cheaper than the equivalent kit on a full-size Range Rover, with the Evoque in particular being a sensible candidate for front-end-only coverage. The Defender is a different conversation. Genuine off-road Defender owners often leave sills bare or use heavier rock-chip film on lower panels, because traditional PPF will scuff on rocks and branches anyway. Defender X and V8 owners, who are predominantly road-driven, increasingly go full-body. On all Defenders, confirm with the installer how they are masking around roof bar mounts and the panoramic roof — it is a common omission on quotes.

03

Coverage options and what they actually protect

There are three real choices for a Range Rover owner. Front-end PPF covers bonnet, full front bumper, wings, headlights, wing mirrors and A-pillars — around 95 percent of stone chip risk on a motorway-driven car and the most cost-effective option for most owners. Front-end plus roof and bonnet wrap-edges adds protection across the panoramic roof and tucks film into the bonnet edges so the leading lip is fully sealed; worth considering if you are parking outside or doing regular long-distance driving. Full-body PPF covers every painted panel, including door handle cup areas, sills and rear arches. The common cost-cutting trick to watch for is installers quietly skipping the door handle cups, which is exactly where day-to-day fingernail and ring scratching happens. Always confirm in writing that cups are included. The full-body vs partial PPF guide breaks down where the line should sit by use case.

Which film to choose: XPEL, STEK or SunTek

Three brands cover the vast majority of credible quotes you will receive on a Range Rover in the UK. XPEL Ultimate Plus is the default for most owners — 10-year warranty, self-healing, well-supported by every serious installer, and the volume choice for premium UK detailers. If you have a standard Autobiography or Vogue spec, this is the safe answer. STEK DYNOshield is the stronger match for SV and SVAutobiography cars finished in Premium Palette colours; the optical clarity is noticeably better on bespoke metallics where the paint is effectively irreplaceable. For satin SV finishes, STEK DYNOmatte is the matt-finish equivalent — see matt vs gloss PPF if you are considering this route. SunTek Reaction is a credible value option on used Velars and base-spec Evoques: 7 to 10 years of protection at a meaningfully lower price point. Avoid it on SV cars; the visual difference shows on darker metallics. XPEL Stealth, LLumar Platinum, Hexis BODYFENCE and 3M Pro Series 200 all appear on UK quotes too. For the full side-by-side, see XPEL vs SunTek vs STEK and best PPF brands UK.

06

PPF vs vinyl wrap vs ceramic coating

This is the most common confusion, so it is worth being blunt. Vinyl wrap is decorative — it changes the colour of your car. It does not protect the paint underneath from stone chips, and in some cases it traps debris against the surface. PPF is protective — it preserves the original painted surface so resale value, warranty claims and Premium Palette colour-match are all preserved. Ceramic coating sits on top of either. It adds hydrophobic properties and makes washing easier. It does not stop stone chips. Most premium-spec Range Rover owners run PPF with a ceramic coating layered on top. These are complementary rather than alternative products.

07

JLR warranty position and what installers need to know

JLR treats paint protection film as an accessory in the UK. Fitted correctly, it does not void your new vehicle warranty. Two practical things to confirm before booking. First, the film tucks into panel gaps rather than sitting on top of them — tucked edges prevent lifting at the wash and keep the visible edge invisible. Second, the installer is insured and bonded. Most JLR dealers will refer you to their approved local installer if you ask — that is usually the safest starting point if you want belt-and-braces. For wider due diligence on the installer themselves, see how to choose a PPF installer.

08

Aftercare and longevity on a daily-driven Range Rover

PPF on a Range Rover that does motorway commuting, school runs, country lanes and the occasional towing day will look correct for 7 to 10 years with sensible aftercare. The rules are short. Hand wash only for the first 14 days while the adhesive cures. Avoid jet-wash nozzles within 15cm of any film edge, indefinitely. Use a pH-neutral shampoo thereafter — no traffic film removers near edges. Self-healing film recovers from swirl marks with sun heat or a warm rinse. If you are planning to sell within five years, the film comes off cleanly — see can PPF be removed and the broader PPF maintenance guide.

09

Resale impact on Autobiography and SV models

The commercial argument closes itself on the higher specs. Well-documented from-new PPF is a genuine line item on used SVAutobiography listings in the £80k-£150k bracket — trade listings routinely cite "XPEL from new" or "full-body PPF" as a value add of £3,000-£5,000 against comparable cars without it. For SV and SVAutobiography in Premium Palette colours, which are effectively irreplaceable if damaged, PPF protects against the single biggest depreciation hit on these cars: visible front-end stone chipping on a bespoke metallic that the trade cannot match perfectly. Owners cross-shopping with Bentley or Aston should also factor in that the top end of the UK PPF market increasingly specs full-body film as standard on £150k+ cars.

10

Bottom line

For most UK Range Rover owners, a front-end PPF kit in XPEL Ultimate Plus is the sensible starting point — £1,200-£1,700 to protect the panels that actually take the hits. SV and SVAutobiography owners should spec full-body in STEK DYNOshield and treat it as part of the build, not an aftermarket extra. Whichever route you take, confirm door handle cups and panoramic roof masking in writing before you hand the keys over.

Reader questions

Common questions, answered straight.

Q01

Does PPF void my Range Rover's JLR warranty?

No. JLR treats paint protection film as an accessory in the UK — it does not void your new vehicle warranty when fitted correctly by a competent installer. Make sure the film is tucked into panel gaps rather than sat on top, and keep the installer’s invoice and warranty paperwork with your service history.

Q02

How much does full-body PPF cost on an L460 Range Rover?

Expect £3,200-£4,800 for full-body PPF on a current L460 Range Rover from a reputable UK installer, with SV and SVAutobiography spec typically £4,200-£5,500 because installers spec premium film like XPEL Ultimate Plus or STEK DYNOshield as standard. Front-end-only kits run £1,200-£1,700.

Q03

Is PPF worth it on a Defender?

It depends on use case. If your Defender genuinely goes off-road, full-body PPF will get scuffed on sills and rear arches — many owners use heavier rock-chip film on the lower panels instead. If it is a road-driven Defender X or V8, full-body PPF at £3,400-£4,800 is increasingly the norm and protects resale on the higher-spec trims.

Q04

Which PPF brand is best for an SVAutobiography?

STEK DYNOshield is the strongest match for SV and SVAutobiography Premium Palette colours — the optical clarity is noticeably better on bespoke metallics. XPEL Ultimate Plus is the safe default for standard Autobiography spec. Avoid budget films on SV cars; the visual difference shows.

Q05

Will PPF cover door handle cup scratches?

Only if the installer specifically includes door handle cup areas in the quote. This is the single most common cost-cutting omission on partial kits — always confirm in writing that door handle cups are covered before booking, because that is where day-to-day fingernail scratching happens.

Q06

Does PPF work on the aluminium panels of a new Range Rover?

Yes. PPF behaves identically on aluminium and steel for protection purposes. Modern Range Rover bodies (L460, Sport, Velar) use aluminium-intensive construction, and any installer working on premium UK cars will be familiar with the panel-flex tolerances. It does not affect adhesion or longevity.
