Multi-stage machine polish that removes swirl marks, scratches and oxidation before any film or coating goes on. Mandatory prep for premium PPF.
What the service actually is, what's in scope, what it costs in the UK, and which buyer it suits.
Paint correction is a multi-stage machine polish that removes swirl marks, light scratches, holograms, water spots and oxidation from the clear coat before any film or coating is applied. It is a prep service, not a protection service — nothing gets wrapped or sealed during the polish itself. Buyer profile: anyone fitting PPF or a ceramic coating on a car that already shows wash marring, plus used-car buyers wanting the finish reset, and detail-focused owners who want the paint at its honest best before locking it under film.
Scope is panel-by-panel and depends on the stage selected. A single-stage enhancement covers all painted exterior panels — bonnet, roof, doors, wings, boot lid, bumpers, mirror caps, A-pillars, sills and door shuts where accessible — and lifts roughly 60-70% of visible defects. A two-stage correction adds a cutting pass on the horizontals and door tops where swirls concentrate, clearing 85-95% of marring. A full three-stage works heavy defects, sanding marks and deeper RIDS where clear-coat thickness allows. Pre-polish prep is the load-bearing part: full decontamination wash, iron fallout removal, tar removal, clay or clay-mitt, and a panel wipe-down. Paint depth gauge readings are taken on every panel before cutting. Common exclusions: textured plastics, satin or matt finishes (require different protocol), and any panel flagged as previously resprayed where clear-coat is too thin to cut safely.
Pricing tracks defect level and vehicle size rather than badge. Single-stage enhancement on a daily hatch or saloon: £400-£650. Two-stage correction on a prestige saloon or estate (3 Series, A6, E-Class): £700-£1,100. Two-stage on a prestige SUV (X5, Cayenne, Range Rover): £900-£1,400. Three-stage on a supercar or show-prep build (911, AMG GT, F-Type, R8): £1,200-£1,800. Used-car reset where heavy sanding or wet-sanding is needed: £1,400-£1,800. Most PPF customers land at the £800 mark — a two-stage on a clean, well-kept car. Add 15-20% for solid blacks and dark metallics where defects show hardest and a slower, finer finishing pass is required.
Mandatory for anyone fitting PPF or a ceramic coating — film locks defects in permanently and magnifies them under the gloss. Also picked by used-car buyers resetting a finish before ownership, owners selling a prestige car who want it photographing properly, and detail-led owners on a yearly or two-yearly cycle. Ownership horizon framing: correct once at the start of the protection window, then maintain with proper wash technique. Skipping correction before PPF is the single most common regret on higher-spend installs.
